REDD+
The REDD+ framework, activities, safeguards, monitoring and results.
REDD+ Results
REDD+ results are measured against the FRL of 52,204,059 t CO₂ per year: emissions below this level in a monitoring period are emission reductions. Kenya plans to monitor at four-year intervals, with shorter intervals as mapping improves.
No results period has been reported in the portal yet. When the next change maps (after 2018) are published, results will appear here against the FRL for each REDD+ activity.
Kenya REDD+ Registry and nesting
On 28 July 2025 Kenya launched the Kenya REDD+ Registry and the REDD+ Nesting Guidelines, the first national REDD+ registry in Africa. The registry is the official public record of REDD+ activities, verified emission reductions and carbon credits. It prevents double counting, supports national reporting and links project-level and national accounting, so that Kenya can take part in carbon markets and results-based finance.
- Nesting Guidelines let smaller REDD+ projects run by communities, NGOs or private landowners be integrated into national accounting.
- The registry will integrate with the upcoming National Carbon Registry.
- Under the Second NDC, Kenya will engage in voluntary cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and set aside part of its mitigation outcomes for its own NDC target; NEMA is the Designated National Authority.
- Results are measured against the Forest Reference Level (52.2 Mt CO₂ a year, 2002–2018) using data from this NFMS.

Readiness finance: USD 3.88 million from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (2016). The updated first NDC (2020) put the forest sector's mitigation potential at 40.2 Mt CO₂ by 2030, of which 20.8 Mt was committed.
