National climate and GHG reports, indicators and tools.
National Climate Reports
| Report | Year | Inventory period | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial National Communication | 2000 | — | First GHG inventory |
| Second National Communication | 2015 | — | Second GHG inventory |
| Third National GHG Inventory (NID) — first Biennial Transparency Report, initial Biennial Update Report, Third National Communication | 2024 | 1990–2022 | First detailed inventory report since Kenya began reporting; basis for future improvement |
The Climate Change Act, 2016 requires every state department and national public entity to report on greenhouse gas emissions. The ministry responsible for climate change (MoECCF) compiles the inventory and submits it to the UNFCCC through the Climate Change Directorate. The updated Nationally Determined Contribution (2020) uses GHG emissions as its main indicator of progress, so the inventory is how Kenya tracks its NDC.
Review and approval
- Sectors, Parliament and other stakeholders reviewed the inventory through a stakeholder engagement process.
- The IPCC Task Force on National GHG Inventories supported the review of the land-sector (LULUCF) inventory.
- The inter-ministerial ETF Reporting Project Steering Committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, reviewed it at political level.
- The Principal Secretary presented it to the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry for approval, who presented it to the Cabinet chaired by the President for final approval.
