GHG Reports

Kenya's Third National Greenhouse Gas Inventory covers 1990–2022 and the three main gases (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O). It was prepared with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines and the IPCC inventory software, and submitted as part of Kenya's first Biennial Transparency Report, initial Biennial Update Report and Third National Communication.

The land sector (LULUCF) grew fastest, by about 20% a year, because deforestation and forest degradation outpaced reforestation and land was converted for farming and settlement. Agriculture and the land sector together (AFOLU) made up 73% of national emissions in 2022.

Scope: the national GHG inventory (NID) covers all land in Kenya (forest, cropland, grassland, wetland, settlements and other land) for 2001–2022 and reports CO₂ only for the land sector. The Forest Reference Level (FRL) covers forests only, for 2002–2018. The two answer different questions, so their figures should be read side by side, not added together.
