Forest Carbon Monitoring

Carbon stocks and change, biomass, pools and maps.

Carbon Pools

Open Carbon Pools

Carbon pools included for Kenya as of January 2020 (Table 3.4.1)
Carbon poolsIncluded
Above ground biomass (AGB)Yes
Below ground biomass(BGB)Yes
Soil organic carbonNo
Dead woodNo
LitterNo

Above- and below-ground biomass are included because they are significant in Kenya, and data are available from the forest inventories of 2015–2017. Soil organic carbon needs further research on Kenyan stock change factors; litter and dead wood are considered insignificant and lack data. Each excluded pool will be included in a revised FRL if it proves to be more than 10% of total carbon stocks.

Gas: carbon dioxide (CO₂) only. Methane, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide will be considered when accurate methods and reliable data are available.
