Survey Planning

Kenya has not yet carried out a full National Forest Inventory. The emission factors in the national GHG inventory and the FRL come from a pilot forest inventory, whose small sample is a main source of uncertainty.

A full NFI would give site-specific emission factors by stratum and sub-stratum, more sample plots and a quantified uncertainty, and would provide data now taken from IPCC defaults: growth rates after afforestation and canopy improvement, root-to-shoot ratios, dead wood, litter and soil carbon, and country-specific allometric equations.
