What is NFMS?
Introduction, purpose, objectives, scope and components of Kenya's NFMS.
Purpose of NFMS
As a Party to the UNFCCC undertaking REDD+, Kenya must develop a National Forest Monitoring System. Kenya has set its purpose as follows:
The objective of NFMS in Kenya is gathering accurate and transparent data and information related to Kenya's forest management and providing it to inform interested stakeholders on the forest status, to report to international conventions, and to make use of it for sustainable forest management in Kenya.
The NFMS has two functions. The monitoring function covers forest cover and forest cover change (activity data), forest carbon stocks (emission factors), forest cover change alerts, policies and measures, biodiversity, and REDD+ and A/R CDM projects. The data management function is the Forest Information Platform (FIP), the database that stores this information and provides it for forest management, including REDD+.
